The National Collaboratories, established by the Department of Energy in the late 1990s, were highly-networked research centers established to test the value of intense collaboration in solving large problems in science and technology. Most of the nation's Grid computing breakthroughs, for example, were pioneered by the National Collaboratories. The federal budget crisis now threatens to wipe out the National Collaboratories and with them, America's lead on the frontiers of computing science. As a result, leading computer scientists, led by Carl Kesselman of the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) at the University of Southern California (USC), have taken up the National Collaboratories' cause and are lobbying the administration and the Congress to preserve these institutional treasures. Tabor Communications Inc., publisher of GRIDtoday and HPCwire, now hosts and sponsors a Web site with a petition to save the national collaboratories: http://www.gridtoday.com/petition/index.html Do your part and sign the petition today. -------- To update your settings or unsubscribe click here: http://news.tgc.com/al.jsp?vk=IFzix6Fu&un=dolinsky@gsu.by&an=360
